Primitive Containers/Vials

To make a simple reed container/vial, just take a sturdy Phrag. Reed to begin with. This one was harvested in the winter time, dead.

Take a stone knife/flake and start cutting at the bottom wall of one "cell". In this case the small knife blade is Onondaga Chert and pressure flaked with dogwood.. yes wood.

Once you have cut it off, decide how long you want it and cut through the other end.

Both cut ends may be rough.

To smooth them out rub them in a circular motion on some rough stone such as sandstone.

The finished vial with a Y section from a dogwood scrap. Let your imagination rule and think of different caps, or designs etc. The remaining bottom piece below the node of the reed can be removed but I chose to keep it on.

There you have it, a little container for bone needles!

Using your imagination, you could come up with very elaborate vials.

Thanks Tony for the idea!
